في هجوم  وصف  بأنّه الأكبر والأشرس من هذا النوع حتى تاريخ اليوم تعرضت العشرات من المؤسسات والمشافي والبنوك والشركات حول العالم إلى هجوم إلكتروني ببرمجة خبيثة تحمل الاسم ““WannaCry Ransomware”، وهي من النوع الذي يقوم بتشفير الملفات الموجودة في الحاسوب وتمنع صاحبها من الوصول إليها قبل دفع فدية مالية بالبيتكوين. وقد بدأ أثر الهجوم  يظهر على عدد من المشافي في إنجلترا، ودفعها إلى إلغاء عدد من العمليات غير الحرجة حتى تتم عملية إصلاح الحواسيب لتتمكن من تقديم خدماتها مجددًا، وقد امتد الهجوم ليصل إلى المزيد من المشافي والبنوك وشركات الاتصالات في مناطق أخرى من العالم كان أكثرها عددًا في روسيا، فيما كانت ذروة ضرره في إسبانيا حيث تعرض مانسبته 85% من حواسيب شركة الاتصالات الإسبانية “Telefonica” التي قامت بإيقاف تشغيل حواسيبها، وفصل الشبكة الداخلية لمنع انتشار الفيروس على باقي الأجهزة كونه من النوع الذي ينتشر تلقائيًا على جميع الأجهزة المتصلة على الشبكة مايجعلها أخطر من البرمجيات الخبيثة التقليدية التي تنتشر من خلال البريد الإلكتروني. وقد  رصد  موقع “Secureli...
